What are some of the better video cards today?

I don't know much about these sort of things, but I'm hoping to upgrade my PC at some point to run my games better. However, there seems to be so many these days, I'm not sure which would be best for my system or how many are "fully" compatible with the games I play. So which video cards are recommended for a Win XP in order to play games like WoW, The Sims 2 games, and the Battlefield 2 games smoothly? Also, are there any other upgrades I should consider? Thanks.

What are some of the better video cards today?
I know a perfect card. I play all those games except wow and the card I am talking about can even run oblivion at high settings which is not really that amazing anymore but it requires more then those games.

The EAX1950Pro its a great card it does not support DX10 but if you use windows xp then you really do not need DX10 even more so for those games.

Plus vista still sucks. Its a card that is fairly compatibles and runs cool compared to other cards in its league. And its not too expensive.

It would be perfect for those games.

edited--- This card will run all of those games on max specs. but your PC will also need good enough ram and CPU. but if your PC is fairly new then with this card you will be laughing.

Here is an url.

I now use a way different setup for more recent games but you will need liquid cooling and over $1000 to get the best types of setups.
Reply:Lots of graphics cards are on the marked today. If you are light on the budget, a GeForce 7600GS would do fine. But I doubt it would play fair on games like FEAR. The Next Option is to go for GeForce 8600GT or 8600GTS. The next is the best; Geforce 8800Ultra (for real game lovers who wants to play games like FEAR at resolutions of 1920x1440) Hope you find your solutions
Reply:Hi have a look here. this should bring you up to speed.

PC Gaming requires a lot of processing power. There's always a trade off between resolution and fps (frames per second) in pc gaming. This means if you want it to look nice, your animation will slow. if you want your animation to go fast and dont have a very fast graphics processor, you will have to turn down the detail.

My recommendation as an absolute base-line starting point would be an 8800gt. I have had a couple of slower cards in the last few months but they were an absolute pain in the butt for games like oblivion and fear.

Admittedly wow and sims 2 are at the lower demand side of things but if you want to play anything relatively recent l8r on down the track it may be nice to have the hardware on board to do it.

In any case good luck and happy hunting. The site above should provide a good starting point. if you only ever want to play wow and sims2 the card above may work ok and you wont need to shell out too much cash to make a go of it (provided you have the cpu and ram currently on board)

How do I stop my video cards from artifacting?

I had the nerd guys over and they said my video cards are causing artifacting. I have the old crossfire x1950s. they seem to run fine, just a few black squares on the screen every once in a while. He also told me to get upgrades. any suggesstions for a nicer but cheap video card for crossfire with Windows Vista drivers. And can I run SLI on this computer eventhough it was set up with crossfire?? Thanks!

How do I stop my video cards from artifacting?
Try improving your card and case cooling. Also go back to default clock settings in case the card is overclocked.

SLI only works on motherboards with NVIDIA chipsets. If your motherboard is crossfire capable, it is most likely that it will not support SLI.

How do I find out what kind of video and sound cards my computer has?

I have a laptop with Windows XP, where do I go to find out what kind of sound and video cards I have installed?

How do I find out what kind of video and sound cards my computer has?
well on a laptop, the video and sound cards are more than likely integrated so don't plan on replacing or upgrading them. the information you seek might be found in the device manager. go to start, right click on my computer click properties. go to the hardware tab and click on device manager. try to locate your video and sound cards from that list.
Reply:You can use the Device Manager from My computer-%26gt;Manage. If you cannot find specific details about the video and sound card models, another option is to install a program like SiSoft Sandra (free version is fine) which will give you hardware information.
Reply:Go to the start menu. Press run. Type in "dxdiag" (no quotes) and press "OK". A window should pop up. If there's some kind of dialog box that pops up and asks you a question, just click anything. You can see your computer's specifications in the "General" tab. Video card information is in the "Display" tab. Sound card information is in the "Sound" tab (you might have multiple sound tabs if you have headphones plugged in.
Reply:here's the path assuming you have windows xp this may also work in Vista.

start / all programs / accessories / system tools / system information

This will open a control panel you can explore to find everything you need to know about your computer.
Reply:Get Nero 7 or 8 and you can use the nero info tool to know what you got...
Reply:Look in the System control panel to find the capabilities. You will find that these devices are built in and not changeable.

What the difference between agp video cards and pci video cards. Are pci older than agp?

I know that pci-e video cards are the latest

What the difference between agp video cards and pci video cards. Are pci older than agp?
PCI are usuallly older than AGP. There are newer video cards that are PCI-E.

AGP video cards are usually "better" (faster) than PCI video cards. Some of them actually have a processor on them. (which really helps the computer to process the information and display it on your monitor more quickly. That is especially important if you are playing games.) PCI-E video cards are better (faster) than AGP video cards.

The major difference between the three of them is, of course, the type of connection that each of them uses. Older motherboards have only PCI slots. Newer motherboards have both PCI slots and a AGP slot. Even newer motherboards have a PCI-E slot.

If you want to buy a better video card - - the first thing to do is to find out what kind of slots your motherboard has ! !

.
Reply:PCI is slower than AGP 8x

PCI-E is faster than both.
Reply:PCI Express cards are newer than AGP cards.

The motherboard slots for the two types of graphics cards are very different. Determine which is supported by your motherboard before you buy a new video card.
Reply:The Theory Of AGP-Performance Vs. PCI-Performance

AGP specifications allowed two different AGP-speeds, AGP1x and AGP2x. The main differences between AGP and PCI start with the fact that AGP is a 'port', which means it can only host one client and this client ought to be a graphics accelerator. PCI is a bus, and it can serve several different kinds of clients, may it be a graphics accelerator, a network card, a SCSI host adapter or a sound card. All those different clients have to share the PCI-bus and its bandwidth, while AGP offers one direct connection to the chipset and from there to the memory, the CPU or the PCI-bus.

The normal PCI-bus is 32-bit wide and is clocked at 33 MHz. Thus it can offer a maximum bandwidth of 33 * 4 Byte/s = 133 MB/s. The new PCI64/66-specification offers four times as much, it comes with 64-bit width and a 66 MHz clock, thus its bandwidth limitation lies at 533 MB/s. However, please let's not forget that PCI64/66 is hardly supported anywhere yet and it was particularly developed to host I/O-controllers with very high data bandwidth, as e.g. IEEE1394 or Gbit-network interface cards. AGP is clocked at 66 MHz to begin with and it is 32-bit wide. This offers a maximal bandwidth of 266 MB/s in case of AGP1x, where data is transferred the common way, at the 'falling edge' of each clock. AGP2x offers 533 MB/s, by transferring data at the rising as well as the falling edge of the clock. The new addition called AGP4x doubles this bandwidth another time to 1066 MB/s.

How do dual monitors and video cards work? Do you have to get two separate cards?

Back in the days, you would have dual video cards, but now the motherboards have dual support? does that mean 2 video cards?

How do dual monitors and video cards work? Do you have to get two separate cards?
There are a couple ways to do it...Either:

1) 2 Video Cards (Each with 1 Display Port), 2 Monitors

2) 1 Video Card (with 2 Display Ports), 2 Monitors

OR

3) 1 Video Card (with 3 Display Ports), 3 Monitors ;)

Use for dual display or triple display (example)

Reply:You need a video card that supports multiple displays. Some have more than 1 port on them so that You can connect 2 monitors to them.
Reply:Dual-card or Multi-cards (AGP/PCI, PCI/PCI PCI/ISA... whatever combination) is easier to setup within Linux's GUI, X11 System, theoretically equally easy using single card with multiple display ports, but with Windows single cards with multiple display ports are your only option. Motherboards should have no say in this area.
Reply:You don't need 2 video cards. You should get a card that has 2 ports or more on it. Cheap ones usually only have one. Then follow the instructions with the video card about installing 2 monitors. It should be very easy. If you have Windows XP it will be even easier. Good luck.

How do I get my computer to recongnise multiple video cards?

I have checked the video cards individually and they work fine by themselves. I can not get my computer to "see" both video cards at the same time. I am trying to use multiple monitors.

How do I get my computer to recongnise multiple video cards?
By now windows should assign resources to them on the fly. You might be getting a conflict like an IRQ conflict though still. Make sure your drivers are current for both cards.

Are these major name brand cards or cheap bargain cards?

What good gaming video cards can I install onto a Dell Dimension 3100 computer?

It does not come with a good video card, and thus I need a new one. There are PCI slots, and a PCI-E x1 slot. Please include links to the video cards you are recommending.

What good gaming video cards can I install onto a Dell Dimension 3100 computer?
Well i good one for the price and power i would say is the Nvdia Geforce 8800, thats for a pci-e slot though.
Reply:even if you could put a new card in, that computer is much too old to be brought to life just by a videocard.

you need a new mobo, which means a new cpu, and ram, and possibly a power supply.

basically a new computer.

keep that one in tact and use it for something else, like a web browsing computer

i can design you a new computer that you can take the list to your local computer shop and get them to build it, or buy the parts and make it yourself (very easy)

just email me with a price range if you'd like that (remember specify the currency though, I'm in Australia)

Whats the difference between video cards that are used for prerendering graphics compared to real-time?

I noticed that professional video cards like nvidias quadro fx cost a lot more than even the newest GeForce 8 series cards, and was wondering what the difference is between video cards used for prerendered graphics and real-time rendering cards like the new GeForce 8 series? I mean, if I bought an nvidia quadro fx, would I be able to use it to play games, or just for 3d animation?

Whats the difference between video cards that are used for prerendering graphics compared to real-time?
The Quadros and the ATI FireGLs are pro level OpenGL accelerators that basically accelerate OpenGL functions through GL drivers.

Normal PC "game" video cards like ATI X1 and X2 and GeForce 7 / 8 series accelerate mainly polygons, transform (rotation and such), lighting, and shading. That's actually VERY LITTLE of OpenGL's capabilities. (You ever tried looking through the OpenGL standard's book?) Remember, games want to boast max amount of triangles, texture elements (texels), and so on per second, where as the Pro cards actually measure performance by some other ways.

So basically we're comparing apples and oranges. Think of our GeForce 8 as... say, a Top Fuel Dragster. And the Quadros as... A Champ Car or a Formula 1 car, a different type of machine altogether. Both are extremely fast... within their design environments. :)
Reply:Pre-rendering, that means you can take whatever time it takes to render a scence. Those animated movies like Finding Nemo and Cars, each frame (or picture) takes hours to days to render. It doesn't matter here, because once they render the frames all, only then they will put it together to form a movie.

In real time rendering, you have to render all the frames at a certain time to maintain playability. Like if you wants your game to run at 30 fps (frames per second), then your graphic card have to render them at 30 frames in 1 second, it cannot take hours just to render one frames.

Since in game you're doing real time rendering, you would want to get a graphic card that does real time rendering, the architecture are all design to do real time rendering, as oppose to prerendering GPUs.

I think u might be able to play games on a Quardo FX, i don't know. But even if your could, the performance would be disasterous you'd be kicking yourself.

Video cards?

What are some video cards that can work for vista and run dreamscence smoothly? an apg video card and not too expensive. also is ati radeon x800 a good video card?

Video cards?
in its time, the x800 and x850 were great cards (good overclockers too) There are some AGP solutions for the nvidia 7 series like the 7600gs and I thing even some 7900s. I don't know about the 8 series, but it is worth a look.

Reply:I think ATi X800 isn't really good video card. X1600/X1650/X1800/X1900 series. But I prefer Nvidia Geforce like 7600 series/7800/7900/7950/8600 series. Unfortunately those series with AGP are rare...
