Is there a compatability for video cards?

I want to change my video card and i want to if it has to ba compatible to my computer and if so how do i know what to buy?

Is there a compatability for video cards?
of couse. ask the seller or your computer shop
Reply:3 types exsist

pci this is old tech

agp

pci express
Reply:There is PCI, PCIe and AGP slot types. AGP has voltage ratings from 1X, 2X-4X, and 8X. PCIe is just PCIe. PCI is out dated. Read up on the AGP voltage ratings if that is what you are running. Or if you are up to PCIe then your wallet is where you should be checking for upgrading because they are relatively new and there is only one compatable type.

Motherboards and Video Cards for gaming?

I am planning on building my first computer but I am haveing a hard time deciding on the right motherboard and video card. I am planning on using the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU and 2GB of RAM (for now. I would like to have the option to expand to 8 in the future). I would like a SLI compatable motherboard as well. I will be using the computer for homework, internet, and all of that kind of stuff, but it will be used mostly for gaming. I am willing to spend a decent amount of money on the motherboard but would like to keep the video card within reason (say around $150-$200 or so). Also I will probably not have the money to by both video cards at the same time so I would like to find one that works well both alone and in SLI. Oh, and one more question, correct me if I am wrong but SLI only works with nVidia chipsets? If that is true, how do nVidia chipsets compate to the Intel standard? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Motherboards and Video Cards for gaming?
Apparantly when he gave his "REAL" answer, he neglected to read the "REAL" question. This best video card you can get for $150 to $200 is this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... a 7900GS, while not the absolute best card out, still a very good card that I am sure you will be more than happy with.

As for motherboard, you do need an nVidia chipset motherboard to run SLI. nVidia chipsets work fine with Intel processors. Here is the problem, currently there is only one nVidia chipset that will support true full SLI, that is the nForce 590. The others will give you SLI, but the PCI Express slots will only run at 8x each, therefore not giving you the full bandwidth. nVidia is scheduled to release new chipsets next week, so you may want to take a look at those.

Here is what I would recommend however. Next year the new PCI Express specification is coming out, which will double the bandwidth of each slot. I would recommend just buying an inexpensive non SLI board now, and then upgrading to one of the new boards when they come out, especially since you don't plan on having two cards right now anyway.
Reply:You should try tigerdiect .It has everything for computers.

Nvidia G-force 6 or 7 series are the Best for gaming

if you want the Most bang for the Buck look for any Nvidia G-Force 6600GT cards in AGP or PCIE . They PWN for the Price
Reply:Intel uses CROSSFIRE technoligy for 2 cards.
Reply:Alright, heres a REAL answer.

Core 2 Duo is the best type of CPU on earth. You must compliment it with a good GPU. The GPU is ofcourse the MOST important piece of ur PC when it comes to gaming, and by FAR.

Current Generation cards that u can buy:

X1900XT 512MB - 275$

7900 GTO 512MB - 250$

or 7950 GX2 - 500$

These are the 2 best cards on earth and for the lowest price. GTO is known as the same card as the former "best" card but for a much lower price, and same goes for the XT.

Since the NEW Generation is right around the corner with the 8800 GTX/GTS, u should wait for those, or for the X2800 cards wich will come in Janurary.

8800 GTX - 650$

8800 GTS - 500$

The performance of the 8800 GTS is abt the same as the performance of the 7950 GX2, but the 8800 GTS is a DX10 card, meaning that has all of the new DirectX 10 features that will run in Windows Vista with the DX10 software.

Personally i think the X2800 series (RD600) from ATI will be even better than the 8800 series, so im going to wait for that, but if u want u can buy the 8800 GTX in a week when it will be launched.

-If u have any questions abt graphics cards, etc. Messege me.

Any good video cards that have a PCI interface?

I have a 2003 Dell computer. I just bought Battlefield 2 and realized that my video card could not handle the game. I want to buy a video card that has a PCI interface. I cannot run PCI-E video cards!

Any good video cards that have a PCI interface?
Are you sure you are limited to PCI, most boards on a system that can run battlefield will have AGP.

Check motherboard specs (AGP is usually a brown(ish) slot further fom edge of case than PCI )

A PCI slot does not have enough data bandwidth for modern video cards, you can find a basic card to hold your desktop, and use a better card for heavy work, but that would be a twin montor setup.

Check motherboard again, see if you ccan use AGP.
Reply:No PCI card is going to be able to run battlefield 2. If you bought it in 2003, it probably has AGP slot. You can upgrade that instead.
Reply:you find some but nothing really that are going to be able to handle battlefield

time to upgrade the mobo for PCI-E
Reply:First check if you computer has an AGP slot. Most older computers have an AGP slot. AGP graphic cards are still widely available (ATI, based on nVidia chipset). PCI-E (express) is the newer standard.

A PCI card is less powerful than AGP. It will work but performance is so-so. If you know your Dell model number, go to the DELL support site, enter your Dell model and look under technical specs for AGP cards.

Can somebody who knows a lot about video cards help?

My computer had a geforce 2 video card. My mom's computer had a geforce 4 video card. Both cards are AGP slot-fitted. I took my geforce 2 and switched it with her geforce 4. Her computer still works with my geforce 2 but my computer won't work with her geforce 4.

The computer turns on but the monitor won't display anything. I tried changing monitors and still the same problem occured. I switched my geforce 2 back into my computer and I still have the same problem. So can someone please advise me on what to do next?

Can somebody who knows a lot about video cards help?
i would first try to enter safemode and uninstall the driver ... then reinstall it .. if that wont work probably reload bios defaults...
Reply:sounds like you have damaged the mainboard or knocked some other connectors lose whilst swapping the cards. check the mainboard power connectors, the other card slots(for the cards seating correctly) and the hard disk connector (yep this can stop some machines reaching the POST stage if plugged in the wrong way). Depending on your knowledge of pc,s you could get yourself a POST code analyser for a few bucks which will tell you why the machine is failing to start
Reply:I think you have touched something while switching your video cards. Check if all the cable are plugged fully. Make sure your RAM is fully inserted too.
Reply:The geforce 4 may only run at higher AGP speeds. A typical AGP graphics card can run at 1x, 2x, 4x or 8x AGP speeds. In many cases, a more modern AGP graphics card will only run at 4x or higher agp speeds. Your computer's mother board may only support the slower AGP speeds. This is something to find under the technical specifications. Since there are many geforce4 cards, i cannot tell you the agp speeds it supports but that is something you can find on the manufacturer's web site.
Reply:go to safe mode and then go to control panel then unistal your geforce2 card ...then restart safe mdoa again with internet

go to nvidia.com download driver for geforce4 ...restart..hopefully this will help

also it can be that your pc cant run geforce4 it can be the powersuply doesnt have enough watts to meet geforce4 requirements. also your card may run slower but doubt it wont completly run at all...

hope i help

Do you need to have the exact same model of video cards for SLI mode?

also I don't think I have enough space in my mother board for 2 video cards unless I get rid of my sound card. what can I do?

Do you need to have the exact same model of video cards for SLI mode?
yes you need to have exactly the same model of video cards for sli and you also have to have an sli capable motherboard, which means two pci-e slots, to do it. you can't just take down other cards and plug in your video card in their slot.
Reply:yes

How do I link 2 video cards?

I'm buying 2 XFX GeForce 8800 GS Video Cards and am wondering how I link them to combine their performance on my PC.

How do I link 2 video cards?
You can infact link 2 video cards together, and depending on the brand and motherboard the result will very.

Firstly, the 2 methods of video card linking are as follows:

Nvidia Cards : Use SLI Technology

ATI Cards: Use Crossfire Technology

Both essentially perform the same task to achieve the same results, but vary in name due to rights for each company.

What does SLI/Crossfire do?

This is a method in linking 2 video cards to increase performance by splitting the amount of work handled by each GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in half. Essentially, you would believe that this makes the cards run twice as fast, which isn't technically the case as you will see shortly.

In order for this setup to be achieved, you will need to have purchased and SLI or CROSSFIRE ready motherboard, that comes with the bridge to place between SLI and CROSSFIRE ready video cards. As listed, your card will be SLI capable, and provided you have an SLI board (eVGA 780i FTW) for example, you are in good standing.

Note: Running SLI is extra power usage, be sure you meet the power requirements for an SLI ready machine before attempting to install the second card as it could prevent the machine from successfully booting. (750W+ Is a good place to start.)

When purchasing the motherboard that the cards will run in be sure to check the following conditions:

1) There are 2 x16 PCI-Express slots

2) They are uniquely pipelined, which will be explained below.

When SLI was first released, SLI capable motherboards would share the pipes between 2 cards. For example, one card in the system would run at 16x, and inserting 2 cards would make both run at 8x, severely crippling the performance. Most boards today will come with 16x/16x capability, and the performance will not suffer.

SLI is great for running on higher resolutions, where there are more pixels to be processed at a quick rate. If you are playing on a low resolution, and low quality settings due to CPU (central processing unit) restrictions, then you are unlikely to see an increase in performance as the CPU will bottleneck the graphics potential of the machine.

That being said make sure your system is up to date with hardware, the motherboard is 16x/16x SLI ready, and you install the latest drivers from NVIDIA's website to enable SLI.

- Ryan
Reply:Doing that is called sli and you'll need an sli bridge cable which should come with your motherboard if it is capable of doing sli.

Just put each card in, and there should be an obvious port facing upwards in the side of the card to plug the cable into.
Reply:You will need an SLI bridge that looks something like this: http://estore.asus.com/images/C1TC60-0A0... However, this will only work if your motherboard has 2 PCI Express x16 slots and is SLI ready.
Reply:You can only link one Video card to the motherboard

there is no way to link 2 video cards together

Does anyone know how to use two video cards in one PC, one PCI and one AGP?

Hi, I have been struggling trying to find out how to use two video cards in one computer. I have a AGP (Nvidia Geforce2 MX/MX 400) and a PCI (Trident Video accelerator 9440).

First, I don't know if I have to change or Update the BIOS to be able to use them. Do I?

Second, I don't know if the cards I am using can be used together. Can they?

Third, The AGP card (NVidia) has an S-video port to connect to a television so when I try to change the settings for the other card it shows me two monitors por the display. One for the monitor and one for a TV because of the one card with VGA and S-Video port.

Fourth, The computer shows me a (!) in a yellow circle for the (Trident 9440 card) I think the drivers for this card have not been updated since the age of the cave man. Anyone know of this?

I will appreciate any help. If anyone knows of a good tutorial for using two cards and not a dual card, please let know.

You guys are great!! Thankx you again!

Does anyone know how to use two video cards in one PC, one PCI and one AGP?
Update the PCI Trident card drivers.

Go to your BIOS and check if you have an option to select which card to use. Generally AGP motherboards do have an option to select which card you would prefer to use AGP/PCI.

Although, you have two display cards connected, at a time you would be using one.

You can surely check with the BIOS website and look for any upgrades related to BIOS.

NOTE: Beware that updating BIOS in wrong way can result in BIOS chipset unusable so be careful.
Reply:there is a new video card type called sli card which can be used two at a time MSI cards have this facility
Reply:do not use 2 it will be messd up
Reply:I tried all that befor on my Compaq, NO WAY, NO HOW is it going to happen. Just get yourself a good AGP Video Card. As far as the GeForce MX 400, throw that sucker away, that's what my PC came with.(Old 7110US,igot it for free, and have upgraded considerably)

How come some PCI video cards have 3 slots and some have 2?

How come some PCI video cards have 2 slots to plug into the PCI slot, for example like this.

http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/p...

and some of them have 3 like this

http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/p...

Does it really matter? Since both cards are PCI, shouldn't they both be able to fit inside the slot?

How come some PCI video cards have 3 slots and some have 2?
First card is for 5 volts signaling

Second card is capable of both 3.3V and 5V signaling. It is a universal type card.
Reply:Well, they are probably PCI-E cards and PCI-E comes in different speeds and even different power ratings, so they put the slots in it to prevent you from accidentally putting it into a slot that will damage the card. You still need to be careful, however, because not all PCI-E slots follow the convention and you might be able to put a card into a slot that will damage it, but that's mostly the case with older motherboards (more than a couple years old mostly).

Are most video cards compatible with most computers?

I am going to upgrade from windows xp to windows vista soon, and need a new video card. I have been looking around, and no video cards say what computers they are compatible with, so i am wondering if most video cards are compatible with most all computers. (In case there are any suggestions for a good video card to get that will be compatible with my computer, i have a hp pavilion a706n)

Are most video cards compatible with most computers?
You have to buy one that will work for your computer. Run the DXDIAG utility and click the DISPLAY tab to get all the information about your current display card. Take that information to Best Buy and let them show you what will work for your system.

Start%26gt; RUN%26gt; DxDiag
Reply:yes

-if it is a PCIe card, then make sure your computer has a PCIe slot.

-Make sure your power supply has adequate power

thats all you should worry about.
Reply:a PCI card will be compatible with a PCI slot and so fourth...if you mean will a brand new 2008 video card be compatible with a computer made 10 years ago, I would try it if I were you..
Reply:When buying a video card, you need to find out if you have AGP, PCI, or PCIE. What I have read about your computer, you might have a AGP slot.

If you have the AGP slot, you might have to go with the AGP ATI 2600 Pro 512mb. This will run vista applications. If you don't need the fancy features, you may look into the DX9 only cards, like the ATI 1650 or the nVidia 7900.

Also, make sure you have a good power supply as 450W will be needed.

How do you increase memory in the intergrated video cards?

tell me the steps on how to increase the memory in the intergrated video card

please dont give me i dont knows' or there will be consequences

How do you increase memory in the intergrated video cards?
integrated video cards don't have dedicated ram, they use shared memory (this means it will be shared with the main memory).

increasing the memory for the video card just means increasing the main memory in this case.
Reply:onboard Graphics chips can either have Dedicated(Fixed) memory which is not configurable or Flexible memory which "Shares" the Main Memory, This is done by the BIOS reserving the allocated memory from the main memory.

To alter the Graphics mem allocation on these Flexable MEM chip you need to change the VGA allocation within BIOS

Depending on your system this is either done by pressing F1 or F2 or Delete during the very first stages of Boot (before the Windows logo).

BIOS should then give you access to it's menus (unless your BIOS has been locked by your manufacturer)

The VGA settings should be under ADVANCED settings or under PCI / PNP settings, if it is not look in all the menus IMPORTANT CHANGE NOTHING ELSE HERE!!!!!! I cannot stress this enough..

when you find the setting you should be able to increase the allocation, value is usually 1-32MB but this depends on the system

Some systems have a Tools Program (GUI interface) which may house the Settings for VGA allocation

remember in raising your allocation you will reserve mem away from free mem so you will have less mem for the rest of the system to use, if you have lots then this is not an issue.

if you still don't get the results you would like you can always install a Graphics Card to increase performance further.

Can PCI video cards be installed on a motherboard that has an AGP slot?

I have a computer with a AGP video card already installed, but am looking for a secondary video card am I am able to install a PCI video card on my motherboard? Any information to help shed light would be great.

Best Regards

Can PCI video cards be installed on a motherboard that has an AGP slot?
You can if you have a pci slot. You can only use 1 graphics card at a time though.
Reply:As long as it is not a pci express card. I have not seen an AGP board that had pci express on it at the same time. If the card is just a PCI, then more than likely you have a few on your MB. I dont think you will find too many pci video cards out there, unless there older models. Check the box, a pci express is usually labeled PCI-X, or PCI-Express
Reply:If you are wanting to bridge them to get more memory for graphics, I don't believe you can. You can have SLI configurations but I think all ports have to be the same. AGP, PCI, or PCI-e.

What kind of video cards are better for gaming performance, ATI or nVidia?

I am currently looking to upgrade from my crappy 64MB GeForce2 video card and I have two video cards in mind that I am thinking of getting: the ATI HIS X1550 256MB or the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 PNY 256MB. Any help would be greatly appreciated, however not rewarded with a material reward.

What kind of video cards are better for gaming performance, ATI or nVidia?
Those are both fairly low-end cards. Personally I'd stay away from the FX5200. Never really had a good experience with those. As for the ATI card,...if you can, go with something more along the lines of the X1600 pro if that's within your budget. Avoid any cards that use part of your RAM as their exclusive memory. Try to make sure that your card has at least 256MB of it own on-board memory.
Reply:They both make really good cards. It mostly depends on exactly what games you are planning on playing.

Also keep in mind that depending on how old your motherboard is, you might not be able to use some newer cards.

Also - your processor speed and the amount of RAM in your machine will also affect how well some games will play - though a new video card should have a major effect on how well it handles 3-d graphics.

nVidia GeForce 7600

ATI Radeon X1200M

Nvidia would be better but, i recommend an 8800gt, much more money(around 200USD) but will give you a biiiig punch.

unfortunately, you can't upgrade video card for laptops, since it built into the motherboard. the only things you can replace in a laptop are: memory, harddrive, keyboard, and the screen.

How do I know what Video Cards are compatible with my pc?

I need somebody to give me any ways possible to find out what cards go with my pc. And when purchasing a new card what i should look for. I also saw some threads about how some cards wont work because of the power supply. My PC says 120-127V at the back.

How do I know what Video Cards are compatible with my pc?
Hi. Some GPUs use quite a bit of power, usually expressed in watts. What ever card you find that is compatible with your motherboard, make sure your PSU (Power Supply Unit) is up to the task. At least 400 watts, preferably more.
Reply:The voltage on the power supply should not matter. It depends what type of motherboard you have, if you have PCI-Express, then get a PCI-Express Video Card (NVidia or ATI), same goes for AGP, which a majority of older computers do have. If you don't have an extra video card slot, get a PCI Video Card.
Reply:Voltage does not matter it is wattage... Read this article on How to Buy a Graphics card it should answer your questions:

http://www.gamegiants.net/article_info.p...
Reply:just try and find out if your motherboard uses AGP or PCI-Express then you can look for w/e card.
Reply:Get PC Wizard 2007 it will tell you all you need to know about your comp including the specs on the card your using now.

Reply:find the model number of your motherboard and look at the specs online, it should tell you whether it has an agp slot or pci express the get that type of vid card. but also make sure your power supply is setup with plugs that plug into newer higher end video cards. because older ones like the 6800gt i have use the same power plug as your cdrom. newer cards have their own special 6 or 8 pin plug

What are some good GeForce video cards?

I know that my computer is compatible with this kind of video card so I want to know which ones are good. Thanks!

What are some good GeForce video cards?
Without your system info, I can only give a general response that may not apply. Right now, I believe the 8800GT is in the sweet spot. I've seen it for around $260 on-line. The model below it is a lot slower, and the model above it is far too expensive for a relatively negligible performance increase. If that's out of your price range, the ATI Radeon 3870 is slightly slower but about forty dollars cheaper. There was a shortage of them the last I heard, and that drove the price into the 8800GT range. But if you can wait a while, that's a solid choice, unless you're eventually planning for a dual-card (or even quad-card) configuration. If that's the goal, stick with Nvidia.

Do barebone computer kits or motherboards include integrated video cards?

I was wondering if they required you to buy a separate video card or not. I always see regular new computers with integrated cards on the motherboard, but never on the do-it-your-self kits.

Example: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/S...

I don`t understand if this kit includes a video card, or not.

Do barebone computer kits or motherboards include integrated video cards?
this motherboard has NO integrated video card. you can tell by the holes on the side of the motherboard

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/S...

this one has a video card on it because it has a VGA port on the side.
Reply:Since the info does not include an onboard video. I would think it does not. When I have bought bare bones I go by what the info says it has and this one does not say onboard video.
Reply:Some have integrated video, some don't.

According to the motherboard manufacturer's website ( http://www.machspeed.com/specs/viper/MSN... ) this model doesn't have integrated video -- so a seperate video card would be necessary.

Where do I get good cheap video and sound cards?

I bought a computer but it doesnt have a sound or video card so I cant play my favourite games or listen to music or anything!!

I need a 3d graphix card and just a sound card to listen to my itunes!! wheres the best place to get the cheapest ones and how much will they be??

also are they easy to install??

Where do I get good cheap video and sound cards?
That sounds very odd. How old is this computer you bought? Almost all current machine have video %26amp; sound built into the motherboard- it's not the highest quality, but it should work for basic tasks like that. Did you just buy a barebones box?

NewEgg.com has the best online prices, but you need to know what you're buying. A sound card you can probably find at any computer store (like the ones in mini malls) for $15-20.

CompUSA has good selection for a walk-in store, although their prices aren't that great unless you find rebate deals.

Video cards- yikes. Good ones are NOT cheap! You can get something minimal like a GeForce FX 5200 or ATI Radeon 9200SE for around $50- those are much better than onboard video and will handle watching movie clips, basic graphics etc.

But cards like that aren't going to handle high-end gaming. Decent cards like a GeForce 7300 start around $100, better cards run $200 and up.

I recommend you have a PC technician examine your system and confirm it doesn't have these items before you spend money on something you might not need- maybe downloading the proper drivers will get your current hardware working properly. In any event, they could easily install the new components for you (and make sure you get the correct ones for your system)
Reply:on the net....
Reply:try newegg
Reply:go to the comp scrap dealer and pull one out . it is cheaper and usually works well
Reply:www.newegg.com In my opinion offers the cheapest hardware, and I find them fairly easy to install, it varies, I wouldnt wan't my grandmother to touch my computer. However if you feel you can read instructions go for it its about 4 simple steps. (No tools required unless you need a screwdriver to open your computer).

I have a question about processors and video cards?

i've noticed a trend in LAPTOPS that if you're going to get one with an intel core 2 duo processor (which most people say is better than AMD), the video card would most probably be a graphics accelerator from intel as well; and if you're going to get one with an AMD processor, the video card would most probably be either an ATI or nVidia video card (both of which most people say are a lot better than intel's).

here's the case: although people tell me to get an ATI or nvidia graphics card, they also tell me that core 2 duo is much better. it's a laptop im buying and i seldom see one with both items included. it's either one or the other.

im planning to get a laptop that is suited for gaming, so which combo should i get? core 2 duo + intel's graphics media accelerator or amd turion 64 x2 + ati or nvidia graphics card?

amd turion 64 x2 + ati or nvidia graphics card

FOR GAMING!

You WILL notice a difference with the intel for doing many things like ripping dvds or unpacking large files etc etc. The amd is DOG slow when it comes to stuff like that. Also, in many regards, the intel is still a superior gaming machine even though it costs more for mhz vs mhz.

BUT, because of the limitations in video cards, if this is for gaming, then it's a no brainer as you will be miserable without a good vid card. Everything else can be lowered to keep the games running in the future such as releases that require more UMPH from the cpu.

I am a bit surprised you couldnt find a laptop with intel and a good vid card?

Have you tried looking at www.newegg.com This is the cheapest and most reliable/honest place to buy online from, with the fastest standard delivery.

Reply:go 4 AMD

cuz amd proccessors are better than Intel's in gaming + nvidia or ati graphic are much much better than intel's too

AMD is better...

good luck
Reply:amd foo
Reply:here is the answer to your question...In the gaming world you want the AMD with the better video... it is the same with desktops, AMDs rule games. INtels seem to take the lead when it comes down to applications like spreadsheets and number crunching stuff. Go and compare desktop systems when they do the processor shoot outs... any graphic intense game the AMDs win... if they don't it usually because Intel is using a new to the market chip and comparing it to an old AMD

Where do you go to upgread radian video cards?

for free would be nice.....you should not have to pay for broken video cards....I have a 9600 radian video card 512.

the sales person is like this video card is great for games...you by it the games do not work...oh by the way for an extra 29.99 you can get the game's to work....I hate theifs.

Where do you go to upgread radian video cards?
Have you installed the correct drivers for your ATI Radeon 9600 and your motherboard?

Here's the ATI link:

If it still doesn't work properly, re-post and describe your problem with as much specific info as you can , including all error messages, word for word.

Then, maybe we can help

In Video cards, what is the difference between GDDR3 and DDR2?

Also, do you have to have DDR3 RAM to have a GDDR3 video card?

In Video cards, what is the difference between GDDR3 and DDR2?
They're each just types of RAM, and not all that dissimilar at that. GDDR is usually used on graphics cards where as DDR is usually used as system ram. The type of system RAM you have has nothing to do and will not effect the video RAM either.

The biggest jump came in going from SDR to DDR RAM. The subsequent DDR2 and DDR3 RAM have a noticeable, but not substantial improvement upon previous generations.

For more info on types of RAM, check the following link.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_ran...
Reply:GDDR3 is essentially Graphics Double Data Ram 3. (Does not translate exactly as this, but it's a easy way to remember!) It is a designation that really means it run's like DDR3 ram memory.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDDR3 Naturally just looking at the number/letter code tells you that DDR3 is faster than DDR2.(a little more info on DDR2 and DDR3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR2_SDRAM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM No your ram memory in your computer system does not have to match your graphics card ram. A designated graphics card,(compared to Onboard graphics, or Integrated graphics. Both mean the same thing. It's just like saying vid card, or graphics card. Same meaning for these two terms), frees up your computer systems processor and ram. Why? Because the graphics card has it's own processor, and ram. It run's independant of your computers system hardware.
Reply:GDDR3 is faster than GDDR2, and no you do not need DDR3 ram to run a GDDR3 graphics card. for example i have 2gb of DDR2 6400 ram but i have a 8800GT which has 512mb of GDDR3.

Just a Question About AGP Video Cards (i think i know the answer but theres no harm in asking others)?

The only AGP Video Cards that are from Nvidia is from the GeForce 7 series but there only DirectX 9.0c capable and the ATI Radeon HD2400 to HD2600 and ATI Radeon HD3850 are DirectX 10-capable.

So is the ATI Radeon HD3850 AGP the best for gaming?

Just a Question About AGP Video Cards (i think i know the answer but theres no harm in asking others)?
They're all good for gaming. If you're using Windows Vista, dx10 videocards are a perfect match.
Reply:If your PC still has AGP slots, just get a new computer, the cards are okay now but there's no sense in spending a few hundred bucks for a year or two until all games have graphics like Crysis does.
Reply:Isn't it great to see ATI addressing the need for AGP upgrades. Those of us that are not ready to throw away our perfectly good machines to get a graphics upgrade now have something to be thankful for.
Reply:Directx 10 is supposed to have more detail in the graphics. I personally own a a gforce card and they are pretty nice. So either way you can't go wrong.

What are the precautions in handling video cards?

in handling video cards , specially in installing one, what are the parts of a video card that is prohibited to touch? Is it ok, because I accidentally touch the bottom part of the card, to where it would fit in, the slot???

What are the precautions in handling video cards?
The same basic precautions for all cards apply to video cards. Make sure that you are properly grounded, so that you do not accidentally zap the card with static.

Probably the only part you shouldn't touch is the side connector edge. This will help to assure proper contact for the electronics. Your skin oils could otherwise interfere.
Reply:No. Typically, you'd take the same precautions you'd make with any static sensitive device (like being grounded).

I generally don't touch the contacts alot in order not to deposit the grease from my fingers on them but otherwise the only things I watch for are related to static electricity.
Reply:make sure your not carrying any static by touching a power supply or a peice of metal and grounding yourself and most importantly never touch the gold pins on the connector of the card.

What video cards work with an Acer M1610, also has Windows Vista?

When using 3 monitors on two individual video cards what causes the monitor to make loud noise and freeze up?

I have an ATI X800XT and a ATI 3D Rage Lt Pro video card, and they seem to work just fine until i have programs running on all 3 monitors. Then I hear a loud screeching noise and everything freezes up. Does anyone have any idea what maybe causing this and what I can do to fix it.. There are no upgraded drivers for the ATI 3D Rage Lt Pro.

When using 3 monitors on two individual video cards what causes the monitor to make loud noise and freeze up?
This does *not* sound good. Is the screeching coming from the monitors (my guess) or from the boards? Whatever it's coming from, stop doing this - you'll hurt a perfectly good piece of hardware.

Probably the best thing to do is upgrade your old video board.

How do I run two video cards at once?

I heard that if I buy two of the same video cards and install them, I can run them together as if they are one, thus doubling there power. Is this true? if it is, how can this be done? Tahnk you so much!

How do I run two video cards at once?
yes you can, nVidia call it SLI technology and ATI call it crossfire, but it not double the performance but just 135-155% performance.

first, you must buy motherboard that support SLI or crossfire features. second, buy VGA card that has SLI or crossfire features. third, enough power supply, large size RAM (min 2G), powerfull processor, big chasing.
Reply:The cards must both be Pci-express and you must have a motherboard with 2 pci-e 16x slots. SLI gives an increase of around 30-60%, but crossfire gives a slightly higher performance increase. You also need the bridge that connects the 2 graphics cards together (usually bundled with an SLI ready motherboard)

What AGP video cards are able to run next-gen PC games?

What AGP video cards are able to run games like Bioshock and Enemy territory quake wars fairly well. Can anyone tell me from experience im looking to upgrade.

What AGP video cards are able to run next-gen PC games?
Man Some of the AGP card can Support the games like Bioshock and Enemy territory and some more games !!!

To say the truth the AGP card now are Stopped for newer model releases !!!! and many Companies are only Kenn at PCI x16 caz this is the card that can support Higher Pixel , vertical Shader and other complications !!! However high memory AGP card come they lack in Pixel , vertical Shaders ...... On which the new Games Depend thes AGP's at maximum have 2.0 ~ 3.0 but Games require more than 3.0 !!!

But even the normal PCI cards come with 3.0 capacity and nice cards come with 4.0 and above !!!

So i say truley now a days AGP's are dissapearing !!! and PCI are raising !!!

Better to say soon Change to new PCI genration Cards !!!

And even PCI x16 are much cheaper than AGp's !!!
Reply:go and test what you have it is very busy at time may need to go back a couple of times

Can I switch video cards between a laptop and a pc?

I play world of warcraft and recently the frames per second have been REALLY low. I think it is because of my video card. I play it on my pc but my laptop has a better video card. Is it hard/possible to switch the video cards between the two? (BTW I dont want to play wow on my laptop)

No.. Buy a new video card for the pc-- I suggest something in an Nvidea - w 256 mb memory or more
Reply:There is no way that this can be done, just buy one for the other machine.
Reply:No, they use separate cards. You would have to buy a new video card for your desktop.
Reply:No

How do video cards work?

Video cards come with there own ram, say 128mb, does that computer only use this and that's all or if it needs more to process something, will it tap into it's own ram. If you have more computer ram, like a gig, and a crappy 64mb card, would that run better than only haveing 128mb or ram, with a 64mb card? Thanks, sorry to be so confusing.

How do video cards work?
Having more system memory may increase graphics accelerator performance if and only if the graphics accelerator used shared system memory. That is, the graphics card used the same memory that the system uses. This way, as you acquire more RAM, you can set the graphics memory higher. This is only common on laptop graphics though, not on desktops. Also, any good graphics accelerator has it's own dedicated memory.

The reason graphics accelerators have their own memory, is so that when the graphics processor needs to retrieve some data, it only needs to goto it's local memory. If it had to go to system memory, then it would take much longer to retrieve the data and would slow everything down. Such is known as a bottleneck.

How do video cards work? *As in is the memory used pending on what shows up on the screen?

same as above. Say i'm playing World of Warcraft, which the recommended specs for a video card say like 64mb w. the hardware transform and lighting...the video card would only use 64 mb of video ram at that time right since that game is the only thing that appears on the screen at the time? Or am I mistaken? Please tell me...thanks in advance!

How do video cards work? *As in is the memory used pending on what shows up on the screen?
I'm a little unclear on the question, but hopefully the following will include the answer you are looking for.

Memory on video cards (in general) is used to hold a framebuffer, that is the image being drawn on the screen.

Modern video cards with 3D capability (compared to the older VGA cards) use the framebuffer for normal desktop work as well. But for 3D applications like WoW they use the video memory to hold texture bitmaps (like grass and stone), and geometry information (like the positions of the polygons which make up a building).

It is possible for both modes to be used together, like when one runs WoW in a window on the desktop. The DirectX driver decides what information needs to be placed in video memory, and swaps things in and out of the main system memory as they are needed.

There are some cards which share memory between the video processor and the main system. This is slower than a card which has all of its memory on-board, but is less expensive. A card like this might use 64M of real video memory and another 64M of system RAM. I would avoid these cards unless you have no choice.

What is one of the best and reasonably priced AGP video cards?

First, thanks for taking the time to assist me :)

I have an AMD Athlon 64-bit (3200+) ~2GHz and 1GB of RAM. In World of Warcraft, I usually average about 30fps.

I'm not in the market to spend a lot of money, so I was wondering what a good AGP video card would be. I know that PCI-E is the newest and fastest technology, but my computer is about four years old and I don't want to replace the motherboard without upgrading the CPU.

I have an NVidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra. If there isn't anything that would be a huge or significally better upgrade (since AGP isn't as common anymore), just let me know, as I don't want to spend $100+ for 5 more frames per second.

I'm not really good with what to look for with video cards, nor do I over-clock. If you would like to inform me of what matters the most with a video card, that would also be appricated.

Thanks again for your time,

Derek

What is one of the best and reasonably priced AGP video cards?
The XFX geforce 7600GT is the best AGP card available, in my opinion. It should be able to raise your framerates about 20 more than your current card.

EDIT: Contrary to the suggestion below, the ATI X1950XT doesn't have an AGP version, that chart is for the PCI-Express x16 version. The ATI X1950XTX and the Nvidia 8800GTX are the best cards for PCI-Express x16.
Reply:Benchmarks here:

The fastest AGP is the X1950XT or X1950 Pro cards.

Matters how much you want to spend. $100 dollar range is the x1650 pro cards. Far faster then the 5950 (in the charts above, it's slower then the 6200 TC:bottem of the list)
Reply:This card may not do you any good, but you can check out what all they have, and they have a pretty good selection and you can narrow it down by price. A place you can do a little research.

Video Cards and the Symptoms of a weak power supply?

Aside from your typical over heat or reboot issues. I've been reading a lot of the importance of buying a good power supply. What are some of the typical things a weak power supply can cause while running games?

Basically I want to know if it impacts the video card and how it performs and what are some things one would look for that could be power supply related while playing games.

Video Cards and the Symptoms of a weak power supply?
A weak power supply would result to voltage instability. This typically causes random restarts.

Look for ATX V2.01 or ATX V2.2 power supply. They have dual +12V rails. And do not rely on minimum power supply requirement. Bigger is better and cooler.
Reply:random shut downs for no apparent reason. lock up(freezing). game will shut down and kick you back to desktop(crashing).
Reply:If you have an inferior Power Supply, things could slow down a bit. Basically, with insufficient power, your new Video Card will not be powered and your computer will switch to the onboard video card.
Reply:Although PCI express video cards are becoming slightly more efficient, video cards are still pretty demanding in terms of power consumption.

I guess things it could effect would be the obvious, it could not have enough power to support your system. Other posibilities would be "locking up." Say youre just about to take a head shot on some noob, and ur PC freezes for no aparent reason, yah good job buying that $10 psu off craigslist.

Or, the fans in the PSU might be more prone to failing if the PSU is maxed out and running hot. And of course you might just hear a loud pop one day and then its time to invest in something more reliable.

Video cards and Operating systems, what do they have to do with one another?

I was told by Dell that the reason my CPU is acting up is because of the video card. Then later she said the Operating system as well. I am running Vista and I only purchased this CPU from Dell about 4 months ago. What do they have to do with one another? Why do I have to totally restore my CPU?

Video cards and Operating systems, what do they have to do with one another?
video card is the thing that processes the images you see and 3d aplications you use so if it is the video card then i would reccomend downloading the latest drivers from whoevers website that you card is from.

if its the os then go start and windows update and this will download all high priority updates also give your computer a virus scan.
Reply:Just so you know, CPU is not an abbreviation for "computer." It's an acronym for "central processing unit." Learn the abbreviations before asking a question, as it's bound to confuse some people if you use incorrect abbreviations.

Uninstall graphics drivers before changing video cards? What do you think is this an important step?

Just upgrading my video card and wondering if i should uninstall the old drivers before i plug in the new card. Thnx

Uninstall graphics drivers before changing video cards? What do you think is this an important step?
to avoid any conflicts you must uninstall your old drivers.

and it doesn't cost anything to uninstall the OLD drivers
Reply:Safest option is to keep old driver. If it becomes a problem, then delete. Your new device may not work, then you won't have any options if the old driver is gone.
Reply:i must say.....leaving such things installed can create one heck of a mess in your registry :P

remove them if not going to be needed, otherwise, http://google.com

search for a driver backup software, back it up then uninstall in case you don't have a copy of the old driver and do not want to lose them for good :)
Reply:Keeping the old driver may not be a problem. But its always good to uninstalla device before you unplug it from the PC. Have found various weired probs when not done. I suggest you to uninstall the old VGA card.
Reply:Keeping the old drivers will not hurt. When you install your new video card and run the install CD, installing the new drivers will overlay what you already have. It it possible some of the driver could be shareware and as such, you would want to keep what you already have.
Reply:as long as you are going to upgrade your video card to a newer one from the same chip set manufacturer, you don't have to uninstall the old driver. Nvidia and ATI don't play nice together and will cause problems if you don't uninstall the old drivers first. if for example you have an nvidia card now with the latest driver, when you put the new nvidia card in, the driver you have now will probably be newer then the one that comes on the disc. the same goes for ATI.

Can you have two video cards in the same computer?

I was wondering right now i have a ATI Radeon series 9550 card and just got a new comp with a ATI Radeon™ X1200 built in the motherboard. I heard that the x1200 is not very good and its the low end of graphics stuff so i wanted to put my other 9550 card in the computer as well, i was wondering if thats possible?

Can you have two video cards in the same computer if one is built in the motherboard?
No, you need to disable the onboard graphics either in the BIOS or device manager. Trying to use both will cause conflicts with each other.
Reply:No, you have to disable the onboard video card before you install the other one.Go to device manager%26gt;display adapters, right click the video card and disable it.
Reply:If you can access you motherboards BIOS, you can disable the on board graphics, and your OS will automatically detect your AGP or PCIE card...
Reply:Your video card will take over for the on board video.
Reply:if you have an available PCI-E x16 port then it will work fine, the 9550 will take over from the integrated crud only if you disable it first via device manager in control panel. Hope this helps.

Can you use SLI on two different video cards?

I know it says not to mix but I can't find my original videocard. Its a Gigabyte GeForce 7600 GS, GV-NX76G256D-RH. Is it possible to get another video card that is close to this model and link the two without running into problems?

Can you use SLI on two different video cards?
as long as its 7600 it will work ... it has to be sli ready of course with the gold fingers at the top for the bridge .. clock and memory as well as bios are not required to be the same ... if its a 7600 and it is sli ready ur good to go ..
Reply:just be sure that their clocking frequencies are the same and that they support the sli mode. it may not be necessary for the same ram capacities.
Reply:no, and sli isnt a huge performance jump as your hoping it to be

Is there a difference between Laptop Video Cards and desktop video cards?

Asking cause i bought a video card and it looks like it wouldnt work with my laptop.

Is there a difference between Laptop Video Cards and desktop video cards?
It's a world of difference. They are not interchangeable. The GPU (graphics processing unit) of a laptop is built into the mobo.

Cheap desktops have built in video but most have an AGP or PCI-E slot to allow a separate video card to be installed.

The add in video cards can range in size also....it sounds like the card you have is not a very powerful one because of the small size you describe.
Reply:you are limited to laptop cards, but desktop cards can go up as high as you want, desktop cards are also alot better.
Reply:most if not all laptop video cards are integrated into the mother board. Some desktop's video cards come integrated as well but the mother board of a desktop usually has an expansion slot for you to buy a video card and pop it in. So in short, laptop video cards are in there for good and you can forget about upgrading it or taking it out and desktops allows you to upgrade them. Other than that, the video cards do the same thing.
Reply:you cannot change the video card on a laptop one that works in your desktop will not work in your laptop ....
Reply:Size!!!

Is it possible to upgrade laptop video cards?

I have a Sony VGNFZ140QE with Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor, 2 GB Ram, and Intel GMA X3100 Graphic Chipset. I can't play Call of Duty 4 with this video card. Is it possible for me to send it in to a computer shop and have them upgrade my video card so I can play CoD4?

Is it possible to upgrade laptop video cards?
don't think you can, because graphics card that fit into a desktop cannot be fitted into a laptop, simply too big ... and iyour laptop seems to have a build in graphics card ... but you can always try (btw your graphics card sucks compared to your other components!)
Reply:You should be able to run the game with this machine.

Make sure that your video card is not being starved for memory.

This card can us up to 300Mb of RAM for video display, but it may be set at only 32MB or 64MB in the BIOS.

Go into the BIOS setup program at boot, and see what the maximum video RAM is set at. If it is not set to over 128MB, change the setting and then try the game. If it still does not work, up the video RAM to 256MB, and try again. It should be able to run the game if it has enough RAM.
Reply:NO...its not possible
Reply:It IS possible, but ever laptop company alters their graphic cards so that it fits the specifications of the laptop. Your best bet is Yes, contact your laptop company, and I am sure they will be glad to upgrade your video card for an additional price.
