Can you mix two different types of video cards?

Can you put an ATI card in with an Nvidia and get better results? Also can you mix two graphics card of the same company and get good results or do they need to be the same type?

Can you mix two different types of video cards?
No ATI with Nvidia

For same GPU type, ATI is very strict. Nvidia is not as strict - you can mix different models - 8600GT with 8800GT, but it is not guaranteed to work. SLI same models, but not by the same brand - Sapphire 8600GT with MSI 8600GT OC will work.

ATI

You must have an SLI/xFire motherboard
Reply:In order to "mix" two cards together, you must have two cards of the same brand. For example, you need two nVidia cards in order to mix them, they don't have to be the same model but have to have the capability. Same goes for ATi as well. Yes you will get better results. But you need a bridge, connecting the two cards together in order for this to work. You cannot just drop two video cards in without linking them physically and expect it to work. nVidia calls this feature SLI and I think ATi calls it Crossfire or something like that. Or maybe that's the name of a card, I'm not too sure about ATi.
Reply:That's just like asking if you can mix two different viruses together.

Are there any normal PCI video cards good for oblivion?

Not the PCI express x16 i need a

Reply:No! 'normal' PCI slots are too slow. It would be ok for old games, perhaps. But not Oblivion...Oblivion is a quite graphical. My AGP card is a bit slow for it. (AGP is faster than PCI)
Reply:HAHAHA@pci video card for Oblivion!

You're kidding...right?
Reply:yeah theres also a xp patch out for low end video cards that allows it to play on slow machines. I would just search google for it i cant think of the site off the top of my head right now!

There is no point of playing Oblivion without all the eye candy turned on.

vitti93 your years of experience haven't helped you much, you would know the best PCI card is the nvidia 5200FX and it sucks.

I have a question regarding my future purchase of a gaming laptop, which involves video cards and processors?

Im looking at two alienware laptops and wondering if i should purchase the 1299 one or 1599. The 1299 intel core duo processor with a 256mb ATI mobility Radeon X1900 video card. THe 1599 one has a AMD Turion 64 Mobile Processor with a 512MB NVidia GEForce Go 7900 that is SLI Enabled. My question regards which is better for gaming, if the processors and graphic cards are really diffrent or similare and please explain.

What do the suffixes at the end of the Video Cards of Nvidia mean?

Often you got suffixes like LE, GO, GT, GTS, GTX

What do they mean? I do know that they say something about their quality, but I need details :D

Do they say about for what kind of purposes they are made or are best for or something? Thanks in advance!

What do the suffixes at the end of the Video Cards of Nvidia mean?
LE = Light Edition

GT = Fast

GTX = Extremely fast

GTS = giga-texel shading

GO = Not sure what the meaning of GO stands for

I hope this helps some
Reply:I believe GO means "Go buy a real computer" because if I remember right, GO is what is used in laptops.

Supported Video Cards for the Orange Box?

I really wanna get the orange box, but im afraid it wont work for my computer, as i have been told before that my graphics card qualifies for such games as company of heroes and battlefield 2 when it doesnt. So, since i have a RADEON 9200 PCI (i know it sucks, its a dell), will that be sufficient for the game if anybody might know?

If you know the supported video cards as well for the orange box, tell me those too, but not just that they have to be direct x 8 compatible, i already know that.

Supported Video Cards for the Orange Box?
To see how well your system handles the game. Try the demo first: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?...

Can you use an AGP video card? ATI has some nice mid range cards that don't cost to much. Check http://www.pricewatch.com

Well first google in "midrange video card reviews" so you can find the one you think will suit you.

The Orange Box is $37 at Circuit City and Fry's Electronics. So if your gonna get the game. Then get it soon before this deal ends. Remember most stores will price match if you give them the site or number.

If you own an ATI video card. Till 2008 you can get Half-Life 2 Death Match and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast for free. HL2:DM is normally $9.99 and does not come with The Orange Box. Lost Coast is a missing level in HL2 and is free when you get HL2 or Orange Box or if you own an ATI card. Get em here:

http://ati.amd.com/buy/promotions/lostco...

If you want the Half-Life 1 collection as well look for either Half-Life: Game Of The Year Edition and Half-Life: Blue Shift which comes with Opposing Force or Half-Life Anthology. If buying used make sure the seller has not used the cd key for his steam account.

Hope your computer will run it and or hope you can upgrade your computer to run it if you have too.

Do the numbers on video cards make a difference as to their performance?

Im stuck between thinking if buying a Nvidia 7800GS and 7600GT and an just wondering if those numbers mean anything. If you look on game packages they say which of those numbers are compliant and i dont know if i should pick up the 7800 cuz its a bigger number even though the 7600 clearly got better reviews. Anyone have a suggestion?

Do the numbers on video cards make a difference as to their performance?
It is quite complicated:

The first digit is kind of "generation" number:

There were GeForce 5000, Geforce 6000, 7000 and the latest one is 8000.

Then next 3 digits represent placement of the card in generation: 200 or 300 are usually entry level cards - they have all the features but they are usually too slow for games.

so, 800, is a high-end while 600 is mid-range.

The last step are the letters - LE is the slowest, GS is the next slowest, then GTS, then GT, then GTX and the fastest is ULTRA .. actually, I'm some unsure about LE and GTS placement...

The funny part is that high-end older generation may be faster than mid-range new card, such as 7950 GT is an awesome card while 8600GT is decent, but not that exciting.

The same logic is true for ATI (AMD) - there were 9000, X000, X1000, HD2000 series and old X850 XT can compete with newest mid-range HD2600 Pro... they using different letters though - most common are Pro and XT, XT is faster.

I found a review with both cards compared, it looks like that 7800GS is up to 20% faster. In some games they perform the same though: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/xfx_...
Reply:the bigger number 7800gs is the newest one out on the market.

if the 7600gt has better reviews,i would do a little research on both, newer is not always better perforamce wise.

i would check out each one on the internet reviews etc.and then decide which to buy .

the higher number the newer, nvidia is a good choice.

Where is the cheapest place(website or store) to buy video cards?

I need to find a place to buy a REALLY good video card at under 60 bucks. Any suggestions?

Where is the cheapest place(website or store) to buy video cards?
Though I can't promise that it will be a REALLY good video card, http://www.newegg.com offers computer hardware for decent prices.

Remember to make sure that it is compatible with your motherboard.
Reply:I really like Tiger Direct..
Reply:Wal*Mart

Pricewatch.com is a website that shows a collaboration or PC hardware sellers (like NewEgg.com) which have the same product but sort by price.

It's a slim chance, but you may be able to get a good deal though auctions too such as Ebay.com

Or even search it on froogle once you figure out what you want like the model and stuff! Technology is always changing! So for 60 bucks! you might get a AGP 8x, or some crappy PCIe

What's the difference between nVidia geforce video cards and other brands that make geforce cards?

GeForce is an Nvidia brand for their GPUs. Nvidia does not typically manufacture video cards for desktop PCs but others use their GPUs as the foundation for graphics cards. So when you see other cards using that brand name it means that the GPU was made by Nvidia.

Of course Nvidia doesn't actually have a factory to make semiconductor devices so the GPU was actually made somewhere else but designed by Nvidia (I think TSMC actually makes most of their devices).

How to use 3 monitors with two video cards in Vista?

Hello there, i have a 6200(PCI) and an 8800gt (PCIE) in my pc. I was wondering how i could have 3 independant screens in Vista? It's like the Nvidia Control Panel's dualview feature, but with 3. Anyone have the know-how?

How to use 3 monitors with two video cards in Vista?
mmm, i have 4 monitors on my windows xp system but i havent tried to use vista on this machine yet. but all i did to get it to work was to install the 2 graphics cards [making sure the drivers are installed], connect the monitors to the outputs on the graphics cards and then enable them within the "display properties -%26gt; Settings" tab.

this same window can be found within "control panel -%26gt; personalization -%26gt; Display Settings"

just select the monitor press the "extend the desktop onto this monitor" and the move it into place.

let me know if this works as i plan on changing to vista soon and i need to know if my screens will work!

What is the difference between these two video cards?

768MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX

768MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra

Also, what is a physics accelerator, and what are its uses?

What is the difference between these two video cards?
As mentioned, the 8800 Ultra is an over-clocked 8800 GTX.

A Physics accelerator helps with effects in video games like rag doll effects and explosions. Although quite effective, most systems usually only have enough PCI slots so they can either utilize a PA or a high end sound card only. Therefore, it is a toss-up for most people as to what they want to use in their computer. Personally, I'd go for the sound card and let the videocard/CPU handle the rest.

In regards to Wireless cards, get one with MIMO as a minimum, read reviews on the cards you are looking at because there is currently strong quality differences between cards. Although N cards are not yet standardized, I'd still go for one due to the average signal strength improvements in general.
Reply:the ultra is really a overclocked gtx, these are both very high end cards also very $$$ expensive. the physics accelerator is a pci slot card (make sure you have room if you use sli) its spose to balance the load between the cpu/gpu for better response times i believe (googlable)

You'll note that there's very little difference between the gt and the ultra in terms of speed. There is a huge difference in price between these cards though. It would actually be cheaper to run two gt's then a single ultra and for less money have a higher performing machine

Also, the NEW 8800gts 512 meg (not the old GTS which comes in 320 and 640 meg variants) is faster than the GTX and costs less.

this 9 page article provides the detail on what I have sketched out here, including comparative benchmarks.

Reply:A physics accelerator is used by some games (not many) to make things look more realistic by moving more smoothly or by having more detail. Not many games support them yet. If you have a specific game in mind, you should find out if it supports it before buying.

There are LOTS of wireless cards for a desktop. The easiest to install plug directly into the USB port on your computer. However, if you are building a gaming rig (which it sounds like you are) and your only connection will be wireless, you should go for a PCI wireless card. Your local computer shop should have plenty, or you can get them at NewEgg.com or similar online stores. They typically cost about $50 for a good one, but you can get them as low as $25 and as much as $100.
Reply:the ultra has more processers and will give you better speed, especially with multiple cards in SLI.

there should be either a PCI or USB wireless card. check your local PC store.

How can I check to see if I accidentally corrputed my audio and video cards when I deleted a bunch of files?

Two years ago, I was deleting what I thought were useless files to increase my space on a Windows Milenium Edition. Nowadays, I can not change my colors to 256. It's stuck on 16 bit color, and my sound is not responding. I pull up Media Player, and it says audio software not detected. Any advice?

How can i find my model of audio and video cards on my laptop without opening it?
If you know who makes your laptop and what model it is you can go to the manufacturers website and download all the drivers needed for that model.

Failing that, search the internet for your laptop model specification and it will tell you there.

Good luck!
Reply:go to the manufactures customers support web site and click on support/downloads, and look for the model you have, enter your model's details then download all the drivers for that model. get the customers support phone number and call them..

had you given more details on what make of laptop you have then more help would have been forth coming
Reply:Go to the website for the manufacturer of your laptop...most of them (if not all) have a support section where you can download drivers based on your laptop model. At the very least, you should be able to get a spec sheet that includes the type of device installed in your system.

Can i have Geek Squad take my computer in and install parts like video cards?

I want to send my hp pavillion computer (desktop) to be upgraded with a new video card and other things important to play games. Can you tell me if they will do that? (p.s Geek Squad is a service by Best Buy that fixes computers)

Can i have Geek Squad take my computer in and install parts like video cards?
They'll do it, but they'll charge you an arm and a leg for it.

Doing it yourself really is VERY easy. There are lots of online tutorials to teach you how. Changing out a graphics card takes about five minutes, and the only tool you'll need is a phillips head screwdriver (to open the case). Geek Squad will probably charge you $50-$100 for those five minutes of work.
Reply:For those interested, you can go to the geek squad web page and view what services they offer and what they charge. Any computer shop can upgrade your video card, Not retail store.
Reply:They will, but they are expensive. You can do it yourself pretty easily. If you don't know how, visit the hp website. They have tutorials on how to do upgrades to your computer.
Reply:The Geek Squad? You have got to be joking? A bunch of kids, barely making what McDonald's pays. Whose primary job is to sell you the highest mark-up Anti-Virus or Anti-spyware that Best Buy happens to be pushing this week. No thanks.

From Slashdot:

http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...

"Zenitram asks:

"I am a lead technician at a company that repairs computers for various vendors. Many of our systems are from Best Buy's Geek Squad. Based on the systems Geek Squad sends us, it makes me wonder what, if anything, do they actually do? We get systems that have issues that we simply shouldn't have to work on, like: installing device drivers, OS reloads, and reseting CRUs (Customer Removable Units). Additionally, we get systems that are misdiagnosed such as: bad hard drive when a system has faulty RAM; no POST when it simply won't boot into Windows; or no boot when it won't power on at all. So, what is the scope of technical repair that Geek Squad techs do?"
Reply:These people that are answering your question are misinformed!!

Geek Squad will do any hardware install for $39. They will do it right. And you have a 90-day workmanship warranty on it.

If you don't know how to do it, it is better to have it done by a professional. If something goes wrong with the work they did on your computer within 90 days, they will gladly fix the mistake at no charge.
Reply:do it yourself its easy!!! the are many books that will show you step by step i.n the libary.I really is simple, a sixth grader can do it.
Reply:if you can open the case on your computer, you would have already done 30% of the work. changing cards is quite easy. here's a link from dell. although it is a different brand, the process is quite the same.

once you have installed the card. boot to windows and install the driver.

Are Video cards different from the graphic card usually found in the PCI slot?

The one I'm talking about is the brown slot in the mother board...I was told that it is for the video card, but when I opened our CPU, I found out that we have non inserted in the slot...And I want to know because our monitor has a problem..It shows white stripes at the top of the screen but shows full screen normally when video driver is not yet installed...

Are Video cards different from the graphic card usually found in the PCI slot?
that brown slot is for a AGP graphics card since am guess your using a onboard graphics card, you would probably need to buy the graphics card from ebay since most shops will no longer sell them
Reply:Well generally speaking a video card mayor may not solve your problem. Though there is good news. Getting ANY! video card will incrase your performance.Simply put your RAM in your computer will show less then what is actually installed (ATM) meaning it is taking ram and dedicating it to your video graphics. Now if it is AGP those cards tend to be a bit more pricey. Also you need to know if it is 8X or 4X agp. AGP has been replced by PCIE...and now PCIE2.0 is leading the way. I recommend finding our for sure if it is AGP or not. if it is Newegg would be my recommendation to get a cheap card. about $75 bucks should do.

I have to open PCI slots. Would putting in two video cards be better than one?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, and I wanted to put in a new graphics card. However, I found out that I didn't have a PCI Express 16 slot. But I also I found two open regular PCI slots. Would putting in two PCI video cards improve my gaming performance by a lot?

I have to open PCI slots. Would putting in two video cards be better than one?
No, you would be better off buying ONE more expensive one with more memory.#
Reply:Sli or crossfire are great mods for computers. they both give more speed. you should get the cards with physis on them already so u dont have to spend more money something u can get on the card. nvidia offers physis.
Reply:Standard PCI slots can only run a single card setup and are not capable of running dual cards like on SLI/Crossfire.

@Ryan: He pointed out that he had PCI slots which are not the same as PCI-e. You should do some research on computer hardware before making statements that are false.
Reply:Yes, if there are still SLI (by Nvidia) cable cards for PCI. SLI is where you buy two of the same card and get a connector so they run together

Is it better to use 2 medium video cards (SLI) or one more powerful one?

For example, would I get better gaming from running 2x7800gts in SLI, or from 1 single 8800gts? I'm seeing all kinds of tables comparing dual 7800gts vs single 7800gt, but nothing comparing the SLI to more (single) powerful cards.

Is it better to use 2 medium video cards (SLI) or one more powerful one?
By far you would be better off buying one 8800gts.

First off, the 7800 does not have Direct X 10 support, which is going to create some amazing eye candy in the coming months. Also, the 8800gts averages about twice the framerates as the 7800 on newer games.

Not to mention the fact that upgrading with an 8800gts will be much easier. All you will have to do is buy another 8800gts (Which will be much cheaper by then) and install it in an SLI configuration.

With the two 7800's you would need to buy another two cards just to upgrade.

How can you tell if your video cards overclocked ram is to high?

Also if you use ati tool will it stop on its own when using the find max core or memory speed?

How can you tell if your video cards overclocked ram is to high?
You get one (or more) of the following if its too high:

1. Crashes

2. "broken" screen

3. strange colors all over your screen.

4. BSODs.

5. Displays nothing.
Reply:if its too high your display wont work
Reply:Yeah if it crashes a lot.
Reply:When you overclock your core or memory too high, you will start getting artifacts on the screen. By this, you will start getting a lot of little blips showing up in random places.

The way I like to over clock is to leave the memory at stock speeds, the raise the core until you start getting artifacts, then back it off about 5 MHz or so. Then, do the same for the memory. I have my 8800 GTX running at 630 / 1003 (2006 effective) - from a stock of 575 / 900.

Also, when you overclock it is important to run stress tests. I really like running 3DMark06 for this. The first game test should be sufficient. Remember to be conservative too! Only up it by 5 MHz or so. You don't want to destroy your $500 card because you were too aggressive!

When you think you have found the sweet spot, try playing a game for an hour or so. If your video card crashes (blank screen but the sound keeps going, etc.) back it off a bit. Your max overclock is very closely associated with your cooling abilities.

Good luck!

Can you get video cards that slot into a PCI express slot on the side of a laptop?

I have a dell inspiron that has a slot on the side which can take pci express cards.

Can you get video cards that slot into a PCI express slot on the side of a laptop?
It takes a different style of PCI card, called an ExpressCard. It's more similar to the old PCMCIA cards than something you'd find in a desktop. One does exist, but it will only display to an external monitor and offers horrible performance compared to even the lowest of notebook video parts.
Reply:Yes you can get them but they are pretty expensive and are hard to find. Games aren't for laptops. Even if you bought an Alienware type computer, that would be obsolete in 4-6 months and you would have no way to upgrade it without spending lots of money.
Reply:You would of needed to purchase a laptop with the slot built in otherwise it would not be possible. It isnt possible yet to upgrade a graphics card.
Reply:I don't think so. Did you mean that you have a PCMIA slot on the side of your laptop?
Reply:With it being a dell mate you might need one from them as not all cards are compatible for the dell systems.

2 video cards detected when theyre shouldnt be?

when i pop in the dell resource disc that came with my pc its telling me that it detectes two different video cards, a geforce 6800 and the 7800 when i only have the 6800. Any reason why it would be saying this, also i have a sli mother board if that helps?

2 video cards detected when theyre shouldnt be?
look up a program called "Belarc Advisor", you can probably find it as freeware. Install and run it. It will go through your whole computer and give you a report of all the programs running and all the processes and hardware installed. See if it picks up both.

Why are newer laptop video cards unchangeable?

what makes them so unchangeable? and I don't mean the integrated video cards.

Why are newer laptop video cards unchangeable?
1. never knew older graphics cards were changeable

2. they are proprietary stuff and hence not sold in stores

edit:

i would like Dana above to please clarify which dell laptop allows graphics upgrades

also, what is this slot you are referring to
Reply:the fact that they are soldered onto the motherboard. laptops have very limited power so they have to be designed around certian power hardware , and graphics cards bary greatly in power consumption , and cards are different sizes so you cant really make interchangeable ones for laptops .
Reply:They are not cards, they are chips that reside on your motherboard.
Reply:Good news is---you can get a upgrade on some laptops. I know I can on mine from dell. I think some will upgrade using the card slot, but most are not changable. Soldered in.

Can sound, wireless and video cards be put in other laptops?

My Sony Vaio PCG k23 does not work anymore because the motherboard is fried. My question is can I take the sound, video and wireless cards from it and put them in a dell e505? I am not sure what is comptiable with what.

Can sound, wireless and video cards be put in other laptops?
If they are individual cards that can be removed from the computer, then yes you can. You'll need the drivers for the cards once you've plugged them into another computer.
Reply:Laptops usually don't have seperate cards for this, they are usually part of the motherboard and can't be relocated to another computer.
Reply:Seems not possible
Reply:call dell support, they will let you know or call software companys that sell these cards, they will tell you if they will work
Reply:Usually the only one fo these that may be seperate is the wireless card if you purchased it as a card and is not internal. All the rest are normally integrated to the motherboard

What specific video cards for laptops are Direct X 10 compatible?

I'm looking at getting a laptop, but it seems like video card manufacturors are so busy hyping their old DX9 video cards that they cover up which cards will actually work with DX10. Does anyone know of a few specific models of DX10 compatible video cards that can be purchased with a laptop?

What specific video cards for laptops are Direct X 10 compatible?
The 8600m is available in asus G1s and G2s and c90 and the ati 2600 is available in the asus a8jr
Reply:There isn't one. As I recall the only video card that's DX10 is the 8800GTS/GTX but they won't fit on a laptop since they can't even fit on a lot of towers. ATI was developing one also but I don't know if it's been released. Most likely that won't fit a laptop either.

What are some nice, decently-priced video cards?

Alright, so I like gaming. The Sims 2 in particular. However, my subpar video card can't keep up with my favorite game and its expansions.

At the moment I have a Compaq Presario, I'm not sure how to check my RAM or whatever, but I want a new video card.

It would help if the card cost 100 dollars or less. Helpful answers only, please.

What are some nice, decently-priced video cards?
definitely get this one NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT

it costs only 70$ and is much better choice than any of the 7000 series

(as one of my friends owns one (7600 which sux, and a ATI Radeon x1600 512mb, beats all of the cards below 7800 series nVidia cards)

I am also buying a new card at the moment, so i know :)

I personally would buy only a nVidia 8600 GTS for 105$

(which will play Sims 2 on max graphics)

or the nVidia 8800GTS 320mb (270$), which i personally would want

overall to enjoy Sims 2 (which i also like a lot) you need a good processor and lots of RAM and tons of Hard disk space (for all the expantions)

by the way, have you checked what slot you have in your motherboard?

is it AGP or PCI express?

if its PCI express then get a nVidia 8600 GTS

if its AGP i would recommend ATI radeon x1600 pro 512 mb

(which i have on my second PC, and I can play The Sims 2 really well) it costs about 70$ maybe a little more

(but i also have a good processor and lots of RAM)

overall i would say, if you can spare a little more then a 100$ then get a nVidia 8600 GTS

if not, get 8500 GT 256 mb or x1600 pro 512 mb (i would recommend ATI in this case)

if you see people complaining about ATI or nVidia, ignore them as they most probably have a corrupt version

or the incorrect drivers installed

none is better neither ATI nor nVidia

for example

ATI Radeon x1950 outperforms all graphics cards when playing Oblivion (and several other games)

while nVidia outperforms all ATI cards in demo testing of almost everything else (including Crysis, the new high end graphics game)

overall its your choice what manufacturer to choose

Reply:well you know the saying, big bucks gets ur big results which is true in the computer indusrty, i would suggest an ATI Radeon 512mb PCI express card, great performance and easy to configure to suit your needs, if you shop around you can get them for round about the $80 mark.....ebay is also a good place to look...hope this helps
Reply:ATI, I had bad experiences with them, so I stay clear of anything ATI if I can help it.

ATI would hang, freeze and generally annoy me because the price I paid for them.

Matrox (Canadian), Nvidia check them out. Nvidia is a good budget card.

I use Nvidia for editing. Great, inexpensive at around $50
Reply:The Nvidia 7600 GT

It is not the newest card, but it will play most games perfectly.

Get it here:

I hope this helps.
Reply:I have an ATI Radeon 9250 (256MB) and it's fine for me. It should play the Sims perfectly. To check your RAM go to rightclick on My Computer and go to properties and near the bottom it should say your manufacturer and all the RAM and processor info.

Are all video cards compatible in laptops and desktops?

I am trying to upgrade my video card for my Dell laptop, but I do not know if cards I am looking at are compatible. If there is a website that can tell me what is/isn't compatible with my laptop I would appreciate it! Please help! Thanks!

TP

Are all video cards compatible in laptops and desktops?
Nope, your laptop's video card is not upgradeable. I don't even need a model number to tell you that. When you buy a laptop, what you get is what you'll have, especially if yours has integrated graphics and/or is a Dell.

For future reference, notebooks use a bizarre and not always standardized system of interfaces for video cards, which is why it's never a good idea to upgrade, even if it looks like it may be possible.
Reply:usually video cards for laptops are really chips on the motherboard.....except if it's like PCI-X slot in there

I would say check with Dell

I don't really know...
Reply:You're best to check the specs of your laptop on the manufacturer's website.
Reply:Laptop cards are part of the motherboard, you can not change them.
Reply:I'm not positive that you even can upgrade a laptop video card, if you do, you're definitely voiding the warranty. But, with desktops, most video cards will fit if you have room and a good enough PSU.
Reply:check out in your manuals they have al of the accessory capability

Does it make sense to go with two video cards now?

I want my computer to be nice, not just now but in 3,4 even 5 years down the road. That's why I've bought 4GB of RAM, and a quad-core processor. But in 3,4,5 years, are two GeForce 8800GT's going to be able to run the newest video games?

Does it make sense to go with two video cards now?
No its not good because the computer doesnt take the high graphics of both, He would put them together and take the minimum grapghics. So they can be equal.

Trust me one Graphic Card is enough
Reply:If you want your computer to perform at the highest possible level you can go with two of the highest end cards and they might run the games that come out 3, 4, or 5 years from now. If you are looking for great performance now and do not want to spend outrageous amounts of money on the top end card you can get comparable performance out of two much cheaper video cards.

you can however get similar performance out of a single card similar to the Saphire Limited Radeon 3870 X2. which is actually two cards in one...
Reply:Depends what version of nforce you got as the older ones only have a 40 % increase in performance with another card added. It will also be hard to find another 8800 gt 3-5 years from now. In that time there will be much better cards and for much cheaper prices. My answer to you is no they wont be able to run them on good settings.
Reply:back then in 2002, if you had 2 graphics card, people will give you weird looks, nowadays having 2 graphics card is perfectly normal =)
Reply:standard computers now wont be nice in 3 years because of moore's law.
Reply:It's normal nowadays to have dual graphics. In the future, you'll need quad SLI.

What are really good video cards and sound cards for video games at a good price?

I mean you get a product worth its price, and also not very expensive, and can you please tell me where to get them online?

Both are very cheap yet very very good!!!
Reply:Buy direct. I use an ATI Radeon 9200 that I got for $90 over a year ago. I'm sure you could get an even better one for less than that now.

I would visit ATI's official web site. Just google them, or better yet, use the Yahoo! Search Engine
Reply:This website is great and has low prices. In fact, the HP company suggested this to me. It was when I wanted a video card for The Sims 2 for a low price.

Can Anybody tell me a list of good video cards for my PC, it's a dell 4700 Dimension?

I want a list of good video cards that is good enough to play a game like Age of Empire 3. It has to be compatible with a dell PC ver. 4700

Can Anybody tell me a list of good video cards for my PC, it's a dell 4700 Dimension?
Your computer sports a 16x PCIe (PCI Express) slot, in case you didn't know that (because you didn't post it).

I'd go with a video card of about 256MB memory, probably nVidia would suit the dell well.

Keep in mind that once you put the card in the system, you'll have to change your BIOS settings, at least according to what I'm reading now.

The onboard video is SHARED, which means if you have 128 megs of ram, 64 megs of it is probably being shared for video.
Reply:Any PCI 256mb card will do fine. check the box of age of empires to verify the card you pick will work with the game.

Any good sites to compare different video cards?

I am looking for a site that will let you choose two different video cards and then compare them with different benchmarks. I have used Toms Hardware Guide, but it seems like there are a very limited number of cards to shoose from. I am looking for something like this:

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.h...

But with alot more cards , or even the abiltity to put in specs and for it to ouput a theoretical benchmark result.

Which Video Cards are the best and have a good price tag?

I want to buy one to play games like age of empires 3 , hl2 (yeah I know they're pretty old now) at the highest possible display settings and no getting choppy and am wondering which video cards can do the job best without hurting my wallet a lot

Which Video Cards are the best and have a good price tag?
I recommend nVidia GPUs. 8800GTX, 7950 GT, 7600GT, 6600GT... All of these should be able to play those games on highest settings with not too many problems. Of course, the higher the number, the better the performance, and the higher the price. You should be able to find any of these nVidia GPU's made by BFG or eVga at any local computer store or even stores online. These are all GeForce graphics processors.
Reply:You will never get the best for cheap. Currently the best sell for around $600. Use this link for comparisons with various benchmarks. Figure out what you are willing to spend and get the best one you can afford.

Use the second link in conjunction with the first to determine what is best for both your needs and your wallet.
Reply:Ati Radeon 9xxx

It costs below $100
Reply:If you really do have a PCI-Express slot, then it matters how much you are willing to spend. Higher the price, usually the higher the performance. A X1900 XT is a pretty good buy at around US $200. Goto www.tomshardware.com to see video card benchmarks to give you an idea of how a video card will perform.

Do some video cards only work for some computers?

My friend is getting a new video card and is getting rid of his video card and he has a dell. Can i use that video card on my computer (a compaq)?

Do some video cards only work for some computers?
yah you should have no problem just make sure you have the right slot it requires( PCIe, AGP,PCI) and make sure its compatible with your version of windows.

dusty was here!
Reply:Computers have different slots for video cards.

AGP

PCI

PCI-Express

As logn as it is the card matches the slot you have, there should be no problem.
Reply:depends on your windows
Reply:Yes. The card must be compatible with your motherboard.
Reply:As long as your motherboard and his card are the same bus type It will work for you. Either PCI, AGP or PCIe.

Can I use two ATI Crossfire Video Cards on an nVidia nForce Chipset?

I want to do a crossfire array with two Diamond Viper Radeon x1950 Pro cards but I am currently using an nForce 570 chipset. Is this possible?

Can I use two ATI Crossfire Video Cards on an nVidia nForce Chipset?
No you cant do it now.

The drivers are illegal now to do such cross firing on a NForce Chipset...that to yours is a 570

Video cards?

crossfire compatible with eachother

what 2 video cards would i need to run a efficient crossfire bored?

under 100 dollars preferably with 512mb video memory?

ati of course/ pci-e 16x of course/ an make sure they compatible with eachother/ i have an idea of what i want but tell me what yall think would be good?

Video cards?
The GPU is more important than the memory. A 256 meg X1950 pro easily beats a 512 meg HD 2600.

About the best you are going to do for that price is two X1950 Pro video cards. With that set up you can run any modern games at high settings.

You will have to buy them used off of eBay. I used to own an X1950 pro. Great video card. Its roughly equivalent to an Nvidia 7900 GT or 7800 GTX.

If you decide to go with a single video card instead, choose the 3850.
Reply:with video cards you get what you pay for, and sli, crossfire does not make much of a difference unless its a high end card anyway, you would be better off buying a single card thats better .

Video cards...?

ok i have this desktop emachines it has 3.00 ghz cpu and everything else is fine but it has a crappy video card what is a good video cards for under 300$

Video cards...?
How old is the comp?

If you provided the model # we could help better.

So if it's PCI-E then an 8800GT or GTS is a good choice.

If you are stuck with AGP then the best video card avaliable for you is the ATI 3850.....it a good card and will run most games OK.

AGP 3850:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

PCI-E 8800GT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

Excellent buy on the 8800GTS

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...
Reply:$300 is a lot of money that could buy almost any card except the tip-top GeForce 9800 GX2 and Radeon HD 3870 X2. Singular 8800 GT cost around $200.

What has to check:

Power supply, a comfortable number today is 500 watts; bigger number is better but the cost skyrockets from then.

Slot type, AGP or PCIE x16? if you have AGP options are dwindling and not as attractive compare to PCIE; lest not forget AGP technology caps out on the median performance of today's gaming need. PCIE not the longish x16 slot variant is as good as not even there.

Case type: standard or low-profile/half-height? Standard is fine, but half-height machines have extremely limited gaming option and meant to be no more than HTPC.
Reply:There are lots of good video cards for under $300. You could spend about $100 on ebay and get a great card that will handle almost any video game.

Look on the site called Tom's Hardware and look at some reviews. They benchmark many cards against each other and you can look up the price.

Unless you're a hardcore gamer or Home Theater PC builder I wouldn't spend over about $125. My $100 ideo card from two years ago still does quite well with most games.
Reply:These are all good answers, but make sure you have a power supply that can handle a 8800 GT or the like. Sometime bigger companies skimp on the power supply. Write down how many watts your power supply has, along with Amps on the 12V rail. (should be between 20 and 40) If you can't find it, take it into a local computer store that can help you. No sense buying a fast video card if the computer just shuts off when you play a game.
Reply:go for nvidia geforce, manufactured by XFX, BFG or EVGA will be fine.

but must be looking for these things

Video cards?

ok imma gonna build a custom pc but i was thinking do i really need sli? exacly what does the video cards do ? i kno it clears the picture but imma already get one of these eVGA 512-P2-N637-AR GeForce 7950GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16

KO Superclocked Video Card do you think i need 2? would it help me out when im playing online games

Video cards?
The card you mention should work great with any of todays games. You are probably looking at about $300 for the one card. You should have no need of SLI and two of those cards.

The card you mention 7950GT is direct X9c compatible, which runs all current games.

The thing to consider now is whether to upgrade to Direct x10 compatible videocard. The new games that are going to come out later this year and the beginning of next year will use Direct X10 and the only card that is Direct x10 is the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS or GTX.

Here are current prices on www.tigerdirect.com

8800GTS 320MB $279.99 PNY manufacturer

8800GTS 640mb $360

8800GTX 768MB $540

I was surprised to see the new 320MB verion of 8800GTS I think that you should either get that one for $279.99 or go for the 640mb version for $360.00

Either card should surpass the current performance of the 7950 GT you were considering and the 8800's have the advantage of being DIRECT X10 compatible so they should have a long lifespan for use with new games.

If you get any of the 8800 cards you would not need SLI with those either.
Reply:nah, don't bother with SLI that card you have will run fine I have the same type but a different brand, it runs current games at max settings fine. For what you pay for the extra card to have SLI you are better to get an 8800 card
Reply:thats a good video card, just get like 1 or 2 gigs of ram and your good to go,it also depends what processor you have, but that sounds good to me,also remember that the performance of the cards varies from game to game,it depends what kind games of your playing, take care.
Reply:The video card is the most important component for playing pc games. It has a video processor and lots of ram devoted to rendering 3d graphics. SLI is only for people that want to get 2 high end cards and spend over 800 dollars. One high end card is better than two mid-range cards. If you are going to spend 2 or 300 dollars look at the Radeon 1950 cards. Make sure it has at least 256 bit memory bus.

Video cards?

For the last 2 days me and my dad have been looking around for video cards. At first we bought a nvidia 6600 oc for a AGP interface.I really didnt like the performance so i took it back and bought a PNY 6600 card.Which one is better, and do i need to get the nvidia 6600 back?

Video cards?
The chipset is the same. You didn't mention the brand of the 6600OC I would guess it was a BFG. The OC (overclocked) version should have better performance. The 6800GS is a good value card that is better than a 6600.
Reply:Go to Tom's hardware, cnet and pcworld websites and check reviews.
Reply:You should really get back the Nvdia because it's much more better...

Video cards?

i want to play the sims 2 on my computer and i am purchasing a new laptop. i want to know if the video card in this laptop will play the games because the video card in my current computer is the reason i cant play now

the new computer has an ATI Radeon x1200

the sims needs:

* A T%26amp;L-capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM.

Supported video cards:

* ATI Radeon(TM) series 8500 or better (9600 or greater required for Vista)

* 8500, All-In-Wonder 8500

* 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800

* X300, X600, x700, X800, x850

* X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950

requirements here:

http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?h...

Video cards?
No, it will run, but you will get tons of errors, and horrible graphics - well, specifically, heads detached from bodies...

Read here: http://buzz.omgili.com/preview/aHR0cDovL...

Basically two people who bought two laptops with x1200 graphic cards, tried playing the sims 2, and got the exact same problem.

If you still haven't closed the deal, look for a computer that features any of the cards listed as supported on the sims 2 site, or any from the 'Low End', 'Mid Range', or "Performance' Video Cards from the following site:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthre...
Reply:hate to say this but you answered your own question. look at the bottom line. x1300 x1600 etc. no mention of the x1200

the x1200 does have a memory thats ok but the chipset is not supported. i personally woud try to find a better chipset such as the x1800 or a 9600

if you decide to go for a desktop id go with a ati radeon 9700 or higher with agp2 or pcie i have the agp model and its pretty cool. it also has hdmi for true digital to lcd grpahics.
Reply:ITs fine Dont worry about it.
Reply:That is a pretty decent DX9 integrated graphics that would have no problem with the Sims 2.

Video cards?

i am sooo lost on video cards. i am looking to buy a new laptop. i want it to play the sims 2 expansion packs i have the first few (up to business) then i bought family fun stuff and it wont work and the sims ppl say its bcuz of my vid card. so, i want to make sure my new laptop has the right card!! the requirements are going to be in the details,

i dont really understand the video cards. are the bullets more types of chips u can have of that brand? will ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 256MB HyperMemory work? how do i know if a chip i find will work? as long as its greater than the numbers listed?? what about an ati mobility radeon 7500?

Video cards?
The radeon 1150 is an integrated graphic card. It will probably lag while playing The Sims 2, so I would not recommend that graphic card at all.

The radeon 7500 is actually worse than the 1150...

Here:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Grap...

The first 65 cards on that list will let you play The Sims 2 with no problem. So when you find a laptop you like, all you have to do is check if the graphic card it offers appears on the top 65 of that list. (Hint: Use cntrl+f to find the card easily)

The first 30 will let you play even more graphic intensive games, say World of Warcraft, or something, so if all you want it for is the sims, just aim for something in between position 30 and 65.
Reply:Any card you get will allow you to at least play Sims (just make sure you get a card- if you have something made by Intel in the graphics card area, it is not actually a graphics card). Other than that, if you don't know what you are doing, you should be fine just judging their quality by their price. You get what you pay for.

How do i know what kind of video cards or whatever i have?

I want to hook up my computer to my tv so i can use my tv as my monitor.

Someone told me to use an s-video cord, i dont know where i would put it though.

I have an e-machines computer and it says nforce some places and nvidia some places.

HELP?! What do i use and where? eek.

How do i know what kind of video cards or whatever i have?
What you want to do will work but the s-video signal that your graphics card puts out will be a far higher resolution and refresh rate than your tv can cope with.

Be aware that the output could damage your tv unless you set it to the correct resolution and refresh rate which will depend on the age of your tv. A modern tv should be able to cope with a screen resolution of 800 X 600 and a 60Hz input without too much trouble but more likely you'll be stuck with the 640 x 480.

This resolution is far too low for most people so you would be better off investing in a tv/monitor which would have a normal vga input on the back.

Also the s-video lead will only give you a display but the sound ouput to go with the signal will have to come from speakers/headphones attached to your pc.

Sorry to sound so negative but in my opinion its not worth the trouble.

Is it possible to upgrade laptop video cards?

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 with Intel 945gm Express Chipset Family. I have no clue what all of that means, but I can't play Call of Duty 4 with this video card. Is it possible for me to send it in to a computer shop and have them upgrade my video card so I can play CoD4?

Is it possible to upgrade laptop video cards?
Generally the Video card is integrated with the Motherboard. Better get ready for a hefty price tag.
Reply:Yes in certain laptops . You will have to refer to your computer manual . Many laptops have the motherboard integrated with the video card. Alot of dell laptops are available for upgrade . Laptops are generally made in a way that to upgrade them it is way to expensive and the benefit is alot less. Might i add that unless your running core 2 duo with at least 1 gig of ram you speed and performance of the gave will be pretty sucky . The general little power house laptop is not made for intense gaming and graphics. Unless they are like alien ware series or dell xps170 type laptops. Some where around those benchmarks
Reply:Thats great people ... way to answer people's questions without READING thier post.

So many times people give you all the specs or what they have and yet there are still so many generic answers -- why bother answering if your not going to address the problem.

HP dv6000 using the 945GM Express chipset -- that video card is built into the motherboard and it does not appear that any other video card was offered by HP for that model - so the answer for you is no, you couldn't just take it to a computer shop and have the video card upgraded.

You might be able to go into the BIOS and increase the amount of ram allocated to the video card which would help increase the performance and may allow you to play the games as a lower resolutions. This would really be your only chance.
Reply:in some of the new ones such as dell yes, in the older versions no, sorry

In which local stores in jacksonville can i buy processors and video cards for an affordable price?

hi, i was just planning to get a new processor and video card but i can only buy them at retail stores and not online. I live in Jacksonville, Florida at zip code 32246. maybe you can name a few stores that sell them. and it would be better if they sell em cheaper.

I dont' think you can buy cpus from the big retailers.Your best bet is a local computer store that specializes in building systems.Just look them up in the yellow pages.

Why can't you buy online?Retailers tend to be 25% - 50% higher than etailers. If it's because of credit reasons, just go to your local Wal-Mart or CVS and buy a prepaid Visa or Mastercard. You'll have to pay a small fee but it would be worth it.You can buy computer parts alot cheaper online. I use 1 for security puposes so my bank acccount isn't invloved.

yea i have a dell dimension 2400 and its video card is built into the memory. now i own rome total war and it runs fine but i downloaded medieval total war 2 demo and it says it needs a video card that supports shader 1 and the only upgrade video card wise on my comp is a pci video card. do you guys know any pci cards that support shader 1 and also if a demo works on your comp does that mean the actual game should as well?

Video cards?
You're in a tough spot only being able to use a PCI (not PCIe or AGP) card. There are only about 3-4 cards left that are even semi decent. Either an NVIDA FX5200 pr ATI 9250 will have to do and both will use SM1-2 (but not SM3) and only the FX5200 will do DX9 - but it's better than IGP =). I would get the FX5200 -- or if you can find an 6800NU (non ultra) I would grab that because that one will do SM3 but it's very hard to find in stock anywhere. Again I would just nab the FX5200 it should be a good match for your system.

Whittch of these video cards can i use to play Prince of Persia The two thrones?
Are you kidding i hope the Nvidia 7300 will run anygame you want without thinking %26amp; The Prince need only a Nvidia 6800 to run at best performance so you see that this card you're talking about is very good %26amp; maybe you need to visit nvidia's web site %26amp; see what this card is capable of.
Reply:Both those cards will do it very well no problems plus lots of other games with good quality. The only thing I dont recommend is the Gigabyte branded card, try and find a different brand one, go for a Inno3D or Asus brand card as I know some people who have had problems with Gigabyte cards, I also suggest you get the 7300GT which is slightly faster

(P.S. I also believe the thing you were thinking of is Pixel Shader of which it has version 3.0 which is good)

What does it mean when I try to play a game I bought it says video cards not supported?

When i try to play a game I bought it says video card not supported?

What does it mean when I try to play a game I bought it says video cards not supported?
It basically means, that that game requires higher end graphics/video cards which are located and plugged into your motherboard inside your computer. I would say go to your nearest computer store and let them see what the required hardware is for the game (it should say on the bottom of the box labeled as System Requirements).
Reply:It means you have an old/outdated video card or comptuer system.

You can either buy a new video card ($50-$500), buy a new computer system ($500-$5,000), or put the game in the microwave and watch it melt (free).
Reply:You graphics card its too old and can not run the game. It's time to upgrade to a better one!
Reply:Is it a PC? Is it an old PC? Most modern games require all kinds of things from the video card and the old school ones can't hack it. The good news is that you can usually pop a functional Video card into your machine for $80 and then all you have to do is worry about whether you have the memory, space, sound card, and processor good enough to run it. Good luck.
Reply:It means you need a new video card.
Reply:I agree on the "its probably too old"..but if its not..I'd make sure you have the latest drivers for you video card..just to make sure.

Is it possible to install 2 video cards and use one or the other when the situation calls for it?

One card doesnt support DirectX 9, but can handle 4 screens. The other supports DX9, but only supports 2 screens. Some game require DX9, but I use this computer mostly for work and use the 4 screens. Is it possible to switch back and forth between the cards without opening up the machine and actually swapping them out?

IF they use the same port. i.e AGP, Then it is impossible.

If they use 2 different port types. i.e AGP and PCI, Then this could be somehow possible, but you have to restart your computer each time you wanna switch cards and enter your BIOS software then choose which graphics card to boor, PCI or AGP.

I did not try this myself, But I think that is gonna work.

When will Video Cards be more powerful and smaller but require LESS power like 50 watts?

Right now there is a problem with these high-end video cards requiring more than 500 Watts of power minimum, and if things keep going this way they'll require 1000 watts soon..

when will that change?

When they run so stupidly hot that they require about 4 spare card slots.

But even then they won't stop. It's always about The Next Big Thing. As long as nVidia, ATI and the gaming companies can squeeze more money out of you, they will.
Reply:I dont see that happening in the near future.
Reply:probably when technology finnaly advances enough that they dont need as much power to run.

But im afraid my psychic powers are on the blink today so i cant actually answer for certain :P
Reply:probably more than 20 years, thats about how far the latest japanese teck is ahead of ours and their video card take about 900 watts to run

What video cards does the ECS P35T-A LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard support?

On the reviews section for the ECS P35T-A LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard, it says to "read the supported video card list carefully", but I can't find the dang list anywhere.

I want to put a GeForce 8600 GTS in it, but I want to make sure they're compatible first.

That card will work. The P35 chipset supports PCI-ExpressX16.
