Is it better to use 2 medium video cards (SLI) or one more powerful one?

For example, would I get better gaming from running 2x7800gts in SLI, or from 1 single 8800gts? I'm seeing all kinds of tables comparing dual 7800gts vs single 7800gt, but nothing comparing the SLI to more (single) powerful cards.

Is it better to use 2 medium video cards (SLI) or one more powerful one?
By far you would be better off buying one 8800gts.

First off, the 7800 does not have Direct X 10 support, which is going to create some amazing eye candy in the coming months. Also, the 8800gts averages about twice the framerates as the 7800 on newer games.

Not to mention the fact that upgrading with an 8800gts will be much easier. All you will have to do is buy another 8800gts (Which will be much cheaper by then) and install it in an SLI configuration.

With the two 7800's you would need to buy another two cards just to upgrade.
