what are the pros and cons of each and which one would you recommend for a moderate gamer?
What's the difference between AGP and pci-express video cards for pc?
Unfortunately, for most people the decision is already made by their motherboard. AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) was the standard 10 years ago, updated a couple of times. PCI Express is only about three years old. So if you are getting a new system or MB, get PCI-E.
That said, the chipset on the card makes more of a difference in the performance you see. The ATI chipsets and Nvidia chipsets (or GPU's) determine the actual perfomance more than the video bus does. A Geforce 7800GS (AGP) is going to beat a Geforce 6800GTO(PCI-E) all day long. But a 7800GTX(PCI-E) will beat the 7800GS(AGP).
In short, get the highest chipset model number you can afford in PCI-E format, in you have the choice.
Reply:PCI-Express x16. There's a new format coming out, so you may want to hold on! See Hardwaresecrets.com, Sysopt.com,Tomshardware.com, and PCmag.com.
Reply:AGP is not commended since it's old and will run slower then PCI-E cards.
There is a reason why 90% of all new cards are PCI-E only.
Reply:AGP and PCI Express are two different kinds of slots (despite looking kind of similar). If you have an AGP card now, you're stuck with an AGP card as long as you own your computer. Generally, PCI Express is faster -- but it only matters if the chipset on the graphics card is faster than an AGP slot can handle.
