What are some cheap video cards with hardware transform and lighting?
We need to know more information. What are you trying to run? How good a video card do you want? And finally, and most importantly, what slots do you actually have in your Motherboard? Old motherboards don't support new Video cards.

To find out what slot you have, with Windows XP, Start%26gt;Run%26gt;Dxdiag (I think). It might be listed there. It's been a while since I've done this though, it might not actually be it. For Mac, Apple logo%26gt;About This Mac%26gt;More Information%26gt;Graphics/Display. I don't know for Windows Vista or Linux.

PCI is the oldest slot, AGP is middle ground (dieing out), and PCI Express is the latest.

If your motherboard has a PCI Express slot, and if you want the best video card out there, then two of the most recommended cards is either the nVidia 8800 or the nVidia 9600. The 9600 is newer, but 8800 has more bang for your buck (depending on which version of 8800 you get. There's GT, GS, GTS, etc, and I'm not sure what to recommend). I have the GT 512 MB, and it runs anything I fire at it full blast with 1280x1024 resolution, including Crysis, one of the most demanding games out there (although only with AA 2x for a steady frame rate, but that's more than enough).

I don't recommend ATi cards currently, as their latest cards are not only more expensive, but are not as impressive as nVidia's cards.
